A rollover car accident on Highway 299 in eastern Shasta County resulted in the death of a 20-year-old woman from Fall River Mills.
The woman was traveling as a passenger in a sport utility vehicle that was driving westbound on Highway 299 near Pit No. 1 Powerhouse. The SUV went off the highway and rolled over several times. The woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was ejected from the vehicle, resulting in her death. Police have not released the woman’s identity to the public.
The California Highway Patrol said the vehicle was being driven by Elida A. Tooley, 21, of Burney. Tooley was wearing a seatbelt when the SUV went off the road and suffered moderate injuries in the accident. She was transported by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Redding to receive treatment. A juvenile involved in the accident suffered major injuries and was also taken to Mercy Medical Center.
According to the CHP, three other juveniles were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident. They were taken to Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills. All three received treatment and were released.
The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident, but officers do not believe the cause of the accident is drunk driving.
